Food waste in Switzerland
As theFederal Office for the Environment FOEN explains, “if food is not consumed, its production will have generated CO2 emissions, contributed to the loss of biodiversity and used soil and water in vain.”
In addition to its ecological impact, avoidable food loss has economic repercussions. Food waste generates costs throughout the production chain. These costs are passed on to consumers in the final prices they pay.
Every year, Switzerland produces around 2 million tonnes of avoidable food waste. This means that the food was edible, but was thrown away because it was not consumed in time.
Our commitment to solidarity as a caterer in Geneva
MAYOR TRAITEUR is a family-run business created by Serge Mayor, chef, and his wife Nawel, interior designer by training. We’ve been offering our catering services in Geneva and the Vaud region of French-speaking Switzerland since 2010. We also run the MAYOR café-restaurant near Geneva’s Parc Baud-Bovy.
As a caterer and restaurateur, we are sensitive to food waste and aware of our social and environmental responsibilities. That’s why, at MAYOR TRAITEUR, we offer our volunteer customers two options to support our action:
- With your agreement, we donate uneaten dishes to charities after every private or professional event. Weddings, birthdays, family lunches, business meals, company cocktails… Whatever the type of reception, the food is donated to LE CARÉ in Geneva.
- We also offer to round up your invoice to a slightly higher amount, so that we can donate the difference to the Partage foundation. To thank you for your gesture, we’ll double the amount on our side. So when you donate CHF 20, the foundation actually receives CHF 40. A great way to participate in our commitment to solidarity!
MAYOR TRAITEUR’s partner charities
We have chosen to donate the food collected at the end of professional or private events, as well as your donations, to two recognized associations. Both are based in the canton of Geneva.
Fondation Partage, Geneva’s food bank
Created in 2005, Fondation Partage fights against food waste, supports professional reintegration and acts for the environment. Its team collects and sorts unsold food from Geneva’s shops and food companies.
In practical terms, the foundation collects over 900 tonnes of food and hygiene products every year. It distributes them to 54 associations and social services in the canton. All in all, more than 11,000 people in difficulty benefit from them every week in Geneva.
Support the actions of Fondation Partage
L’association LE CARÉ, welcoming people in difficulty
Created in 1977 on the initiative of CARITAS,LE CARÉ (Caritas, Accueil, Rencontre, Échange) is an emergency shelter. It provides a home for adults experiencing material and/or social difficulties in Geneva.
Social workers provide basic necessities such as free hot meals and access to showers. The association also distributes clothing, food and hygiene products. In addition, residents can benefit from social support and occupational activities in the fields of sport, art and culture.
